Time Mngt (Step 5): Resources for Time Management

In this last episode of our Time Management series we cover 2 types of resources for time management you can use to assist you in your journey towards your goal.

Resource types

Resources are all things that can enhance your awareness, knowledge and understanding on a specific topic and/or enable you to do whatever it is you set out to do.

What we think off most often when the word resource is used are Information Resources. These are the Topic Focussed Resources.

  • written: books, magazines, articles, newsletters, blogs, papers, etc.

  • Audio: podcasts, audiobooks, radio programmes, etc.

  • Video: tv programmes, documentaries, infomercials, vlogs, how-to's, inspirationals, informative, reviews, testimonials, etc.

Basically the type of resource that speaks about the topic your are researching in a third-party type of way from your perspective. You are the third-party witnessing the event, you are not the main centerpiece.

The focus lies on the topic itself, rather than on you.

Information Resources are great for general answers from a lot of different angles and perspectives

The second type of resource are the Interpersonal Resources. they are the Human Focussed Resources.

The advisors, counselors, mentors, coaches, experienced peers, friends, family, colleagues, neighbours, etc.

Going from left to right in this list it becomes increasingly more personal and that changes the way we look at this resource dramatically. The more personal it becomes, the less likely we are to consider it a resource and the more likely we are to perceive it as 'help'.

And 'help' triggers a very different feeling than 'resource'. And with that activates an increasingly higher level of reluctance.

Because we have been made to believe that only the weak seek 'help'. So we want to avoid that at all costs, in order not to appear weak. Even without realising it that we're doing it. Even if out loud we are very vocal in our attitude that 'seeking help is not a weakness!'.

When it comes to ourselves, whether we want to admit it or not, we very much still adhere to this bias. It launches us in to the grip of three mind controlling powers: Ego, Fear and Shame.

"can't you figure this out yourself?" ; "You need help for that? Really?" ; "Why do you need someone else to tell you what to do with your time?"

Ego, Fear and Shame never work in your favor. Ditch them.

Here's the thing… Nobody figures things out for themselves. Nobody.

Every single person in the history of forever that ever did anything ended up, in some part of the process (maybe not at the beginning), relying on the input of others. Even the hermit in the middle of the Amazon forrest or the monk in the mountain cave. Even they relied on what they could recall they learned (or witnessed) from others before their isolation.

I won't go in to the psychology of these three concepts and recognise that my advies in the title may be cutting the corner a bit too short. But for the purpose of this series, I stand by the statement.

If they stop you from getting what you need in order to reach your goal then it's clear.

They need to go.

At least for this project.

You can get them back for other things if you need to. Who knows, this may very well be the catalyst that starts your process of taking control of them instead of letting them control you.

Interpersonal Resources

Just like with the information resources, there are free and paid interpersonal resources. And just like with the information resources, the paid ones are (supposed to be) more professionally verified either through training, experience, peer review, testimonials or a combination of these.

Which does not mean that all paid resources are by definition better than all free resources. Sometimes the free ones are still compensated by other means.

Examples are the student counselors employed by schools, universities or training organisations.

KiZend

I'm available as a mentor or people who seek assistance organising their Study Project.

As a mentor I combine coaching, counseling and training techniques depending on your needs. We can tackle your entire project, including other aspects than time management, or parts of it. You can sign up at any given moment in your process.

I prefer sessions in person because it gives me much more to work with if I can interact with you in real life rather than through a monitor.

But I have done a lot of online sessions in the past and am certainly willing to do them again if the situation requires it.

Sessions are available in Dutch and English. I operate in person in the region Ghent-Deinze.

Contact me for a free intake talk to go over your specific needs and how I may be of use to you.
